Position Summary
The Director of Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) is responsible for developing, implementing, and leading a comprehensive safety and environmental program across all commercial construction operations. This role ensures regulatory compliance while driving a proactive safety culture that reduces incidents, protects employees, minimizes environmental impact, and mitigates organizational risk—including fleet-related exposures. This position is both strategic and hands-on—requiring strong field engagement, leadership influence, and the ability to hold teams accountable in fast-paced, high-risk environments.
Key Responsibilities
Safety, Environmental & Risk Strategy
Maintain and execute a company-wide EHS strategy aligned with business objectives and growth plans
Establish leading and lagging metrics across safety, environmental, and vehicle incidents
Partner with executive leadership to embed risk mitigation into project planning and execution
Lead company-wide safety initiatives
Regulatory Compliance & Environmental Management
Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations
Oversee environmental compliance programs, including SWPPP (Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans), erosion control, and site environmental inspections
Maintain all required environmental permits, documentation, and reporting
Develop and update safety and environmental policies (fall protection, hazard communication, spill prevention, etc.)
Serve as primary liaison with regulatory agencies and third-party auditors
Field Operations, Incident & Fleet Management
Conduct regular job site visits, audits, and safety/environmental inspections across multiple project sites
Lead all incident investigations, including:
Workplace injuries and near misses with the support of HR
Environmental incidents (spills, violations, SWPPP failures)
Fleet/vehicle accidents and motor vehicle incidents
Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective/preventative actions
Oversee fleet safety programs, including driver safety standards, MVR reviews, and accident trend analysis
Ensure proper documentation, reporting, and claims coordination with insurance providers
Support project teams in developing site-specific safety and environmental plans
Training, Development & Culture
Design and implement training programs covering safety, environmental compliance, and driver/fleet safety
Ensure all employees and subcontractors meet required certifications and compliance standards
Coach and mentor field leaders, superintendents, and project managers on safety and environmental accountability
Promote a culture of proactive reporting (near misses, hazards, environmental risks)
Subcontractor & Vendor Management
Develop and enforce subcontractor safety and environmental prequalification processes
Monitor subcontractor compliance with safety, environmental, and fleet-related expectations
Partner with procurement and operations to ensure risk requirements are contractually enforced
Data, Reporting & Continuous Improvement
Track, analyze, and report on key KPIs, including:
TRIR, DART, EMR
Environmental compliance metrics (SWPPP audits, violations, corrective actions)
Fleet incident rates and vehicle-related claims
Identify trends and implement data-driven improvements
Present safety, environmental, and fleet risk performance to executive leadership
Implement and optimize EHS and fleet management systems/technology
All other duties as assigned by leadership
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Construction Management, or related field (or equivalent experience)
OSHA 30 (or 500/510) certification
8+ years of progressive safety experience in commercial construction
5+ years in a leadership role
Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations and construction safety standards
Experience with EM 385
Experience managing safety across multiple job sites and project teams
Proven track record of reducing incidents and improving safety performance
CSP (Certified Safety Professional), CHST, or similar certification is preferred
Experience with Procore is preferred
Certified to give Equipment, CPR, Fall Pro, etc trainings is a plus
