Texas Tech University - Student Recreation Center

Lubbock, TX

About the project

The Texas Tech University Student Recreation Center underwent a major renovation and 65,000 SF expansion to address the aging facility and growing demand for modern fitness amenities, funded through a student-approved fee initiative.

The project included renovation of the existing 125,000 SF recreation center and natatorium, along with the addition of new facilities such as a 6,530 SF weight-training area, three indoor basketball courts, a cardiovascular theater, aerobic and fitness training spaces, a roller hockey/indoor soccer rink, an outdoor equipment rental shop, and administrative offices.

A signature feature of the project is a three-story climbing wall rising 50 feet through the atrium, creating a dramatic focal point for students and faculty. The second floor features a suspended 1/8-mile walking and jogging track that circles the basketball courts below and offers views of the outdoor playing fields. The building addition is distinguished by expansive glazing on the south, east, and north façades, allowing activities to be visible from outside and encouraging campus engagement.
